Even those swept up in the current crush of Latin musical sensations would be forgiven for initially¹ overlooking the almost terminally low-key Marc Anthony, who is less cheesecake-y than Jennifer Lopez (although admittedly not by much) and more artistically², um, serious, than the amiable³ Ken⁴ Doll that is Ricky Martin. The American-born Anthony's first English-language release is a deftly⁵ performed and slickly produced work that finds the singer laboring⁶ under the constraints⁷ of superstar producers and overly dramatic, radio-friendly balladry. Anthony has a marvel⁸ of a voice that he doesn't seem to know quite what to do with; Despite flirtations with salsa, strings⁹, funk, and other crowd-pleasing crossover options, Anthony seems shoehorned into a tepid¹⁰, the-Next-Mariah-Carey-But-He's-Male role that ill-suits his obviously prodigious¹¹ gifts.
