[01:00.55]M:An all-around actor,George Grizzard is noted both for the
[01:07.58]quality and variety of his acting career.
[01:12.65]Born in Roanoke Rapids North Carolina,
[01:17.61]Grizzard came from a religious family that
[01:22.05]did not encourage his early interest in acting.
[01:26.41]Grizzard's first big chance on Broadway was his role as an escaped prisoner
[01:32.94]in the 1955 crime thriller The Desperate Hours,
[01:38.72]starring Karl Madden,Nancy Coleman,and Paul New-man.
[01:44.78]Following 212 performances on Broadway,
[01:50.24]Grizzard stayed with the cast for a three-month national tour.
[01:56.11]Returning to Broadway in 1956,
[02:00.56]he took a comic role in The Happiest Millionaire.
[02:05.41]For his work in that comedy he received the Theatre World Award.
[02:11.29]Both the clarity and energy of his performance had been praised by many critics
[02:17.85]Grizzard's talent was perhaps best shown during his Broadway appearance
[02:25.42]in the four short comedies entitled
[02:29.79]You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running.
[02:34.54]In a single performance,he played the roles of four people
[02:39.69]and everyone was surprised that the roles were all played by the same actor.
[02:45.36]Since the late 1950s,Grizzard has been much admired
[02:51.42]for his many television and motion picture roles.
[02:56.07]Of all these appearances,perhaps the most notable is his role as John Adams
[03:02.73]in the first six of the thirteen--part series The Adams Chronicles.
[03:09.39]The chronicles cover 150 years in the history of the American political family
[03:16.34]that included John Adams,the second president,
[03:21.20]and his son John Quincy Adams,the sixth president.
[03:27.07]Earlier in his career,
[03:30.44]Grizzard spent morethan a year preparing the title role
[03:35.59]for a 1963 Minneapolis production of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
[03:42.07]More recently,at the Circle in the Square in New York,
[03:47.03]he played the lead in George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman,
[03:52.91]a five-hour-long romantic comedy. |
