South African parliament building fire partly contained

President Xi extends condolences over passing of former Greek president

Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a message of condolence to Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou over the passing of a former Greek leader.

Former Greek President Karolos Papoulias died on December 26 at the age of 92.

President Xi described Papoulias as an extraordinary politician and leader of Greece as well as an old friend of the Chinese people.

He said Papoulias has long been committed to deepening the China-Greece friendship, actively promoted bilateral cooperation and firmly supported Beijing in hosting the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Nuclear unit with Hualong One reactor starts power generation

China's second nuclear power unit using Hualong One, a domestically designed third-generation nuclear reactor, has begun generating electricity.

The No. 6 unit in the city of Fuqing was connected to the power grid on Saturday evening and started power generation.

The China National Nuclear Corporation says the unit is in good condition and all the technical indicators meet the design requirements.

Quake hits southwest China's Yunnan

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Lijiang in Yunnan Province on Sunday.

The quake happened in the afternoon, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Four people were injured in the quake.

Over 2.84 billion vaccine doses administered on Chinese mainland

Authorities say more than 2.84 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered on the Chinese mainland.

The figures were released by the National Health Commission on Sunday.

China allocates 500 million yuan to Shaanxi for pandemic control

The Chinese Finance Ministry has allocated 500 million yuan to Shaanxi Province to support the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Saturday, Shaanxi reported 123 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of local cases in the latest resurgence to more than 1,590.

South African parliament building fire partly contained

South Africa's parliament in the legislative capital Cape Town on Sunday confirmed a fire on its precinct.

The fire affected both the Old Assembly Wing and the National Assembly Wing of the buildings of the parliament.

The fire has been contained in the old wing and firefighters are currently trying to control the fire in the new wing.

Shanghai promotes winter sports

China is encouraging 300 million people to get involved in winter sports nationwide.

Despite rare snowfall, Shanghai is seeing a surge of people's interest in winter sports, especially among students.

One school has even built its indoor ice rink.
