The Federal Government hasn't ruled out tax hikes to fund a 50-billion-dollar overhaul¹ of the health system. Kevin Rudd is vowing² to fix the hospital system with the Commonwealth³ taking over funding of all primary healthcare and 60 per cent of hospitals .He wants the states and territories to hand over 30 per cent of GST revenue to fund the plan. Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has warned the Opposition⁴ and minor⁵ parties not to block the changes in the Upper House.

 

The clean-up will continue in parts of south-west Queensland today as floodwaters slowly recede⁶. Torrential rain in Roma and Charleville has caused millions of dollars worth of damage to homes and businesses.

 

Greece has announced a 7.2-billion-dollar package to cut its budget deficit⁷ and help it avoid bankruptcy⁸. But workers have staged violent protests against the measures, which include freezing pensions, increasing sales taxes and cutting public sector⁹ holiday allowances.
