The Federal Government hasn't ruled out tax hikes to fund a 50-billion-dollar overhaul of the health system. Kevin Rudd is vowing to fix the hospital system with the Commonwealth taking over funding of all primary healthcare and 60 per cent of hospitals .He wants the states and territories to hand over 30 per cent of GST revenue to fund the plan. Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has warned the Opposition and minor parties not to block the changes in the Upper House.

 

The clean-up will continue in parts of south-west Queensland today as floodwaters slowly recede. Torrential rain in Roma and Charleville has caused millions of dollars worth of damage to homes and businesses.

 

Greece has announced a 7.2-billion-dollar package to cut its budget deficit and help it avoid bankruptcy. But workers have staged violent protests against the measures, which include freezing pensions, increasing sales taxes and cutting public sector holiday allowances.

 

And the Socceroos has secured a spot at next year's Asian Cup with a one-nil victory over Indonesia in Brisbane. Mark Milligan scored his first international goal late in the first half to clinch the win.
