 The U.S president Barack Obama, as you seeing, has arrived in New Jersey¹ to inspect the storm damage. He'll be meeting rescue workers and residents in flood-ravaged Atlantic city. A massive clean-up is under way after the superstorm caused widespread damage along the east coast. At least 60 people have died and millions are still without power.

 

The federal government will introduce its watered-down poker² machine reforms in the parliament this morning. They include a trial of mandatory³ precommitment technology in the ACT. The government is confident, it has the numbers to pass the bill after securing crucial support from the Greens.

 

At least 130 people are missing after their boat capsized in the Bay of Bengal. Only a handful of survivors⁴ have been found, the boat was carrying Rohingya Muslims fleeing ethnic⁵ violence in Burma. Officials in Bengladesh say they were heading for Malaysia.

 

The first horse vaccine⁶ for the deadly Hendra Virus will be released today, the disease has killed four people and dozens of horses over past two decades. Authorities hope this new vaccine will help stop the virus being transmitted through humans.

 

The former labor⁷ MP Craig Thomson has lanuched a scathing⁸ attack aganist the federal government's asylum⁹ seeker policies. He's accused his former colleagues of pandering¹⁰ to redneck views. The crossbencher is particularly critical of a plan to excise¹¹ the mainland from Australia's migration¹² zone.
