 A senior New South Wales police officer is calling for a royal commission into sexual abuse in the Catholic church. Detective Chief Inspector¹ Peter Fox says the church has been involved in a widespread cover-up. He's accused some priests of destroying evidence and frustrating² police investigations³ to protect the church.

 

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has told Russian television that he has no intention of leaving his country. Earlier this week, the Britain Prime Minister David Cameron suggested the idea of offering the president safe passange from Syria. President Assad also warned against foreign intervention⁴ in the escalating⁵ conflict.

 

The former US congress woman Gabrielle Giffords has come face to face with the man who shot her in the head two years ago. She was in court when Jared Loughner was sentenced to seven consecutive⁶ life terms in prison. Six other people died in the shooting in Arizona.

 

A savage⁷ storm has caused damage and blackouts across western Sydney. The state's Emergency Service has received almost 200 calls for help, mainly in Penrith and Ingleburn. Winds up around 100 km/h brought down powerlines, plunging⁸ thousands of people into darkness.

 

The Federal Government has ditched its plan for a national internet filter up. The proposal was first put forward in 2007. Opponents had argued it would impinge on freedoms and slow down online search speeds. The government will now rely on existing powers to ban child abuse material.
