Administrators¹ at several public hospitals have been found taking medical kickbacks² in excess of tens of millions of yuan, in a recent anti-graft investigation³.

Prosecutors⁴ said in one case, the president of the First People's Hospital of Yunnan in Kunming received bribes⁵ of over 35 million yuan in cash and illegally acquired some 100 properties.

检察官表示称，云南第一人民医院院长收受现金3500多万元，非法房产约100套。

Wang Tianchao, head of the First People’s Hospital of Yunnan, was accused of abusing his power in his responsibilities overseeing the procurement⁶ of medical equipment, personnel management and construction projects.

In the northwestern province Shaanxi, the management at six public hospitals have come under anti-graft scrutiny⁷. Prosecutors in Xianyang, a city near Xi'an, said they discovered at least three medical equipment and pharmaceutical⁸ companies paid bribes to local hospital administrators.

Hu Yu, a lawyer at Han Ding United Lawyers in Beijing, said a lack of supervision⁹ and restrictions¹⁰ on the power of hospitals heads were the reasons for the problems.
