3. A US navy vessel⁴ is on its way toward Haiti, just in case tropical storm Thomas strengthens to a hurricane and strikes this week. The impoverished⁵ nation is still not recovered from January's major earthquake and millions of people are living in tents. Thomas will be the first major storm to hit Haiti since the quake.

4. The San Francisco Giants are baseball's world champions, defeating the Texas Rangers⁶ in five games. Edgar Renteria hit a three-run home run in the seventh. That was all the Tim Lincecum needed. He pitched three-hit ball over eight innings, giving up just one run. It's the first title for the Giants since 1954.
