1. Voting has started in the 2010 midterm elections. Republicans are trying to regain control of the House and the Senate. It's expected the GOP will win back the House with the balance of the Senate still in play. President Barack Obama is expected to watch election results from the White House.

 

2. A US official says three suspicious packages found in September may have been a dry run for last week's mail bomb plot. The packages may have been sent to test the logistics of the air cargo system. The September parcels only contain papers, books and other material. It's expected they were sent by the Yemeni militant group al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

 

3. A US navy vessel is on its way toward Haiti, just in case tropical storm Thomas strengthens to a hurricane and strikes this week. The impoverished nation is still not recovered from January's major earthquake and millions of people are living in tents. Thomas will be the first major storm to hit Haiti since the quake.

 

4. The San Francisco Giants are baseball's world champions, defeating the Texas Rangers in five games. Edgar Renteria hit a three-run home run in the seventh. That was all the Tim Lincecum needed. He pitched three-hit ball over eight innings, giving up just one run. It's the first title for the Giants since 1954.
