 　　How Dandy Got¹ Home 丹迪寻家记

　　It was² time to go home from the picnic, and the cars were waiting for the boys. 野餐结束，该回家了。汽车正等着这些男孩。

　　Joe could³ not find Dandy anywhere⁴. 但乔却到处都找不到丹迪。

　　He called and called, but the little dog did⁵ not come. 乔一遍遍呼喊他，但这只小狗就是不见踪影。

　　All the other boys helped Joe look for Dandy. 其他男孩也都来帮乔一起找丹迪，

　　But no one could find the little black and white dog, and at last Joe had⁶ to go home without him. 但他们都没找到这只黑白相间的小狗，最后乔不得不自己回家了。

　　"Maybe Dandy is not lost," said⁷ one of the boys. "Maybe he went home." “也许丹迪没有迷路，”一个男孩说，“也许他已经回到家了。”

　　But Joe did not find Dandy at home. 但乔回到家中并没有看到丹迪。

　　"He may find his way home tomorrow morning," said Joe's father. “也许明天早上他就找到回家的路了。”乔的爸爸说。

　　Joe shook⁸ his head and said, "It is too far for a little dog like Dandy to find his way home. 乔摇摇头，说：“这儿离那边太远了，像丹迪这样的小狗，是找不到回家的路的。

　　Oh, dear! I wish I had never let him go with us." 噢，天哪！我真希望自己当初没有带他一起出去。”

　　His mother and father were very sorry for Joe. 乔的爸爸妈妈都为乔感到很难过。

　　"Come and eat your supper now," said his mother. “现在先过来吃晚饭吧，”妈妈说，

　　"We will all look for Dandy in the morning." “明天早上我们一块儿去找丹迪。”

　　But Joe could not eat his supper. 但乔却怎么也吃不下，

　　He was thinking⁹ and thinking about his lost dog. 他老是在想那只迷路的小狗。

　　"Poor Dandy!" he said. “可怜的丹迪！”他说，

　　"I did not take very good care¹⁰ of him. Maybe I'll never see him again." “可怜的丹迪！”他说，“我没有照顾好他，可能以后再也见不到他了。”

　　Just then he heard the telephone and ran¹¹ to answer it. A man was talking. 就在这时，电话响了。乔冲上前，拿起了电话。电话里传来一位先生的声音。

　　"Hello," said the man. “你好！”那位先生说，

　　"Do you people own¹² a little black and white dog? A boy told me you had lost one." “你是不是养了一只黑白相间的小狗？一个男孩告诉我你丢了一只。”

　　"Oh, yes," said Joe. "His name is Dandy. I lost him today at the picnic." “嗯，是的，”乔说，“他的名字叫作丹迪，今天野餐的时候我把他弄丢了。”

　　"He is here at my house by the park," said the man. “他就在我靠近公园的家里，”那位先生说，

　　"Wait a minute, please," said Joe. “请等一会儿。”乔说。

　　He called to his father, and they talked for a minute. 乔喊来爸爸，和爸爸讨论了一会儿。

　　"I'll try it," Joe told his father. Then he took¹³ up the telephone again. “我来试试看吧。”乔对爸爸说。说完，乔又拿起电话。

　　"Hello, sir," said Joe. "Will you please take Dandy to the road near the school? “先生，您好，”乔说，“您能把丹迪带到学校附近的那条路上吗？

　　The man said, "Dandy heard you. He is trying to get out of the house. 那位先生对乔说：“丹迪听到了。他正试图从我家里出去。

　　I'll take him right down to the road and start him home. Good-by." 我一会儿就把他带到那条路上，让他自己回家。再见。”

　　Joe went to the window to watch for Dandy. "I wonder¹⁴ if he will find the way," he thought¹⁵. 乔到窗前守候丹迪。“我很担心他不能找到回家的路。”他想。

　　He waited and waited and watched the street from the window. 他在窗边等啊盼呀，一直望着窗外伸向远处的街道。

　　Yes, it was Dandy! 没错，那就是丹迪！

　　Joe ran to open the door. In a minute the tired little dog was in his arms. 乔跑过去打开门。不一会儿，这只疲惫的小狗回到了乔的怀里。
