Lesson 20 Did You Hear That?

第20课 你听到了吗？

Brenda: (whispering) Jerry! Jerry, wake up! I think I heard someone in the house!

布伦达：（低声）杰瑞！杰瑞，醒醒！我想我听到屋里有人！

Jerry: Huh? What's the problem? Why aren't you asleep?

杰瑞：嗯？有什么问题吗？你为什么不睡觉？

Brenda: Shh! I think an intruder has broken into the house. Do something!

布伦达：嘘！我想有人闯入了这所房子。做点什么！

Jerry: What do you want me to do? Give me your phone. I'll call 911, and the police will be here soon.

Brenda: Shh, listen! Did you hear that? Go look and see!

布伦达：嘘，听着！你听到了吗？去看看！

Jerry: The worst thing to do is to surprise a burglar¹. The police will be here soon. Let them do their job. Hopefully, they'll catch the burglar red-handed.

杰瑞：最糟糕的事情就是给窃贼一个惊喜。警察马上就到。让他们做他们的工作。但愿他们能当场抓到窃贼。

Brenda: What if they clean us out?

布伦达：如果他们把我们洗劫一空呢？

Jerry: Don't worry; we're insured². Listen! Sirens… it's the police! Have you ever seen anyone being caught red-handed? Well, now's the time.

Brenda: We'd do better to stay out of the way. Whoever³ they are, they're probably already on the run. Besides, what if they're armed?

Jerry: Hey, you have no faith in our police force! Besides, you were just telling ME to go and take a look! C'mon! Let's go and watch!
