 Uncommonly conscientious¹ for a seaman², and endued³ with a deep natural reverence⁴, the wild watery⁵ loneliness of his life did therefore strongly incline him to superstition⁶;  他为人诚挚，有虔诚的信念和坚定不移的信心，海上既紧张又孤独的生活使他常常进入一种迷信状态。

but to that sort of superstition, which in some organizations seems rather to spring, somehow, from intelligence than from ignorance. Outward portents⁷ and inward presentiments⁸ were his.  不过，这种迷信更多的是出之于智慧而不是愚昧。

By this, he seemed to mean, not only that the most reliable and useful courage was that which arises from the fair estimation of the encountered peril¹³, but that an utterly¹⁶ fearless man is a far more dangerous comrade than a coward. 斯达巴克这句话透露着两层意思：坦然地承认现实，才称得上真正的勇敢；和这样一个人一起出海，比和一个懦弱的人一起出海更危险。 

1 conscientious
