 The Cape¹ of Good Hope, and all the watery² region round about there, is much like some noted³ four corners of a great highway,  海上的航线就和陆地上的公路一样，也有很多交叉的地方，

where you meet more travellers than in any other part.  也就是岔口，我们刚刚经过的好望角就是其中之一。 

It was not very long after speaking the Goney that another homeward-bound whaleman, the Town-Ho,was encountered.  这些路口是交通要道，所以最容易碰上别的船。 

She was manned almost wholly by Polynesians. In the short gam that ensued she gave us strong news of Moby Dick.  我们的“裴廓德号”在刚刚碰上“信天翁号”不久，又碰上了另一只正在归途之中的捕鲸船。 

To some the general interest in the White Whale was now wildly heightened by a circumstance of the Town-Ho's story,  那只船有一个很有意思的名字，叫“大鲸出来了号”。 

which seemed obscurely to involve with the whale a certain wondrous⁴, inverted⁵ visitation of one of those so called judgments⁶ of God which at times are said to overtake some men.  这“大鲸出来了”本是早先的一些捕鲸船桅顶的瞭望手在看到大鲸之后的一声叫喊，现在不知怎么的成了这条捕鲸船的船名。 

1 cape   

n.海角，岬；披肩，短披风
