I Am Nobody！Who are you? 

Are you nobody, too?

How dreary² to be somebody! 

How public, like a frog 

To tell your name the livelong day 

To an admiring bog³! 

 

 

This poem is a typical Dickinson's defense⁴ of the kind of spiritual privacy she favored, indicating that to be a Nobody is a luxury incomprehensible to the dreary Somebodies - for they are too busy keeping their names in circulation, croaking⁵ like frogs in a swamp in the summertime (reminding all the other frogs of their identities). 

 

1 banish
