The Australian cricketer and commentator1 Richie Benaud who’s been called the “Voice of Cricket” has died. He was 84 and had been suffering from skin cancer. During his playing career, he was a skillful all-rounder and a master tactician2 leading his country twenty-eight times. Australia never lost a Test series when he was in charge. The Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has led the tributes to Richie Benaud today.

We remember him with tremendous affection. He hasn’t just been the “Voice of Cricket” since the early 1960s, he was an extraordinarily3 successful Australian cricket captain. And he led our country for five years in twenty-eight Tests and he never lost a test series.

My colleague Jones has been talking to Jonathan Agnew, a former England Test cricketer and now BBC cricketcommentator who worked with Richie Benaud.

Yeah, he was a television man. And crickets are funny old game. We take ourselves and sport takes itself so seriously.

Put your brain into gear before opening your mouth.

Yeah, we should all do that more often. Yes, indeed it was what he did.

And one which I can’t understand so I’m requiring your expertise4 to pass this for us, “never ask for a statement”. Do you get that?

You have to ask a question to get the response.

Right. Okay. Can you give us your favorite Richie Benaud story then?

Well, look. I mean Richie, from our perspective, I’m speaking on behalf of all sporting broadcasters really when I say this, I mean for more sport, was just the man. You know, we all have people in our various professions who we admire and respect. And Richie was that man for us. You know, we would all aspire5 to be like Richie Benaud. And I’m a radio man. But you know I had to work with him for a while. And I’ll always be very very grateful to Richie for that. But you know, we talk about him as a commentator. You know, hewas a mighty6 fine cricketer himself. He was a national hero. So he was a real all-rounder.

New scientific research has found that being obese7 in middle and old age can reduce the risk of developingdementia. A study of nearly two million people, age fifty-five and over conducted over a twenty-year period found people who are underweight in later life were significantly more likely to suffer from dementia than those of a healthy weight. The finding is published in the British medical journal The Lancet. The findings were not an excuse to pile on the pounds.

So the message should not be that people should go away and start eating burgers and not be worried about the weight.
