There are the generation that are standing1 still while the world moves on without them. Young people, out of education and out of work, struggling to get jobs because they lack experience.

At the moment, I've gotta do for anything, cause it's just so hard to get the job, so you just gotta have what you're given.

No, I’ve got any jobs given. It's just mopish. How does it make you feel? Not very happy.

I’m, personally, I'm troubled. A lot of people didn't do so well in school. It's getting harder and harder every day.

The government believes a work experience program is the way to break the benefits cycle. This employment agency already focuses on finding meaningful placements, getting young people experience so that they can get onto the job ladder.

Main barriers are lack of experience, lack of current work experience. Perhaps not many work references that can stand off when they are applying for jobs, also how to apply for a job. A lot of vehicles just made disengaged, might not finish school, might miss out vital careers, development and guidance that they needed.

In the Sandwell area, the current economic climate is challenging. Many employers have tightened2 their belts during the recession and scaled back on recruitment.

This firm of butcher’s operates 16 shops across the West Midlands. But they recently recruited a new batch3 of trainees4, and staff here say there are opportunities out there for young people. It's just a matter of looking hurried enough.

To some, it is anything if you are willing to work. And when you got the right attitude, I think you can, you know, you can get many things and that's what most employers are looking for.

More than a quarter of a million under-sixteens are now growing up in homes where nobody has ever worked. Ministers have described this as a ticking time bomb. Defusing it could be the biggest job of all, but we’ll go some way to getting Britain's unemployed5 youth moving once more.
