Dialogue 1

Jingjing: How are you, Mark? Anything new?

Mark: I'm afraid not, Jingjing. Just like most people, I'm going through the first-half-of-winter stretch and trying not to fall behind in my work.

Jingjing: That sounds pretty common. I've had a bit downtime to work on projects I enjoy, but have mostly been busy keeping up with my regular work. Hey, did you hear about the lady in Philadelphia who recorded 30 years of TV news?

Mark: I heard that story mentioned as a sideline when I was listening to the news. Do you know much about it?

Jingjing: Yeah. I was really pulled in once I started reading the details. First of all, her name is Marion Stokes. She was very active in the 1960s and then wanted to live a more private life.

Mark: Okay. You said 30 years—what years were those?

Jingjing: Well, she passed away in 2012. Her first recording2 was of a Nightline broadcast about the Iranian hostage crisis.

Mark: That was in the late 1970s, wasn't it, during Jimmy Carter's presidency3.

Jingjing: That's right, 1979. It began in November and lasted more than a year.

Mark: Wow, it'd be interesting enough just to see coverage4 of that event. I remember seeing Ted1 Koppel, the host of Nightline, on TV when I was a kid.

Jingjing: Well, you could see plenty of those big-name news anchors in all the hours of tapes Marion Stokes made.

Mark: So, let me get this straight: she recorded the news once a day for 30 years?

Jingjing: No. She started taping all the news from major networks. This was just at the beginning of the 24-hour news cycle. She left her machines running during the commercials and public service announcements

Mark: Wow. If someone puts all that on the Internet, you could visit the website and flip5 through the channels in 1985 or 1995. It be cool just to sit there and watch real TV that way instead of edited videos.

Jingjing: That's thinking like a couch potato, Mark.

Mark: I bet her project is more significant than that. What do you think of it, Jingjing.

Jingjing: I had a lot of ideas as I was reading the story. Let me pull it up on my computer here while we're talking, so that I get the facts right.

Mark: Sure. No rush.

New words :

an additional or auxiliary6 story, often-times provided as a link or mentioned verbally in a news broadcast, so that people can continue reading the story under the current headline and remember the keywords for the sidelined story to read later

<be> pulled in <by something>

become interested in something, want to keep reading

let me get this straight

(a way of asking for clarification and confirmation) (usually after this, the person asking repeats what he/she thinks he/she just heard in slightly different words)

24-hour news cycle (noun) 24

(the word “cycle” is an echo from when TV news aired every evening and a fat Sunday newspaper meant in-depth coverage of issues spanning several days or weeks) the current condition of journalism7, since the takeover by cable news and the world-wide web: a rush to publish stories and catch readers with flashy headlines, a general tendency toward sensationalism and fear-mongering

flip through the channels (verb phrase)

use a remote control to watch a few seconds or minutes of TV on each station, then changing over to another, without stopping to watch any one full show

Dialogue 2

Jingjing: Ok. So here's the first article I saw.

Mark: Oh, that's a good website. I get a lot of my news from there.

Jingjing: Right. And here's the webpage for the movie. It's called The Recorder: the Marion Stokes Project.

Mark: Wait, what? There's a movie about a person who recorded TV?

Jingjing: There is. I haven't seen it. But the footage of major world events is enough to make a movie. It's cool to see what television looked like in different eras, don't you think?

Mark: Well, I think it's something we take for granted nowadays, because everything can be kept in digital archives.

Jingjing: Yes, but in the 1980s and 90s, even television stations were deleting their own old material and reusing the tapes.

Mark:Wow, now that you mention tapes, I'm wondering how many it would take to record 30 years of non-stop footage on three or more TV channels.

Jingjing: Hold on, I saw that number... Here it is: 70,000 tapes.

Mark: Whoa! Where did she put all of them?

Jingjing: She sent them out to a warehouse8. She didn't want people to know about her project. So, she even had the new tapes delivered secretly in small batches9.

Mark: Wow, a project that kept her busy for three decades—and hardly anyone knew about it!

Jingjing: Yep. And she also read 11 newspapers per day, and saved most of those.

Mark: I've heard of people like that in neighbourhoods where I've lived and visited—people who never throw anything away. But here it sounds like her painstaking10 work turned out to be the best kept record of world events in the era before digital media.

Jingjing: Yeah. Who would have known an old lady in a small apartment could take so much responsibility for preserving the last quarter of the 20th century?

Mark: Well, I'll keep my eyes open for that movie about her. Hopefully there's also a website where people can watch the footage.

Jingjing: I'd watch it too.

Mark: Thanks for sharing the story, Jingjing!
