 The ancient city of Lijiang dates back to the fifth century and is home to sixty percent of Naxi people, one of China's many minorities. Naxi musician, Mr.He invites me to his home the nextday to meet his family.

  Many minorities in China complained that they have been marginalized by the majority Han people, who make up more than ninety percent of the population. The Naxi are keen¹ to preserve² their cultures and beliefs. Mr. He's ninety three mother is well known³ locally.

  Why are you known as Naxi queen? How have you got that title?

I was put on this earth to sing. If I sang for three days and three nights, I wouldn't even finish. Maybe that's why people call me Naxi singing queen.

  Mr. He's invited friends over for traditional singing song. Some of their outfits⁴ are inspired by village people.
