Violence has again erupted in the Gaza Strip, as Israeli 1)bulldozers moved in to 2)demolish Palestinian buildings said to be used in attacks on Israeli targets. Three Israeli soldiers and five Palestinians were reported wounded. The clashes are the latest challenge to a U.S. - brokered cease-fire.
Palestinian gunmen traded fire with Israeli troops at the Rafah refugee camp near the Egyptian border early Tuesday. The army says it was destroying houses used to stage attacks on Israeli targets. It says the demolitions were necessary to protect the troops. Palestinian sources say the army demolished 10 houses in the operation.
Israel radio says Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip came under mortar attack overnight, but no injuries were reported.
The latest violence comes one day after a militant of the Islamic group Hamas blew himself up in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas promised to send 10 3)suicide bombers against Israel after Israeli troops killed an 11-year-old Palestinian boy on Saturday.
A cease-fire negotiated by U.S. CIA [Central Intelligence Agency] director George Tenet was to have taken effect a month ago. The level of violence has 4)declined somewhat since then, but 5)clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants continue almost daily.
Since the 6)outbreak of the intifada, or Palestinian 7)uprising, over nine months ago, more than 600 people have been killed - three-quarters of them Palestinians.
Yasser Arafat has reportedly 8)instructed his security forces to step up their activities against terrorists. Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres Monday said the Palestinian president has ordered what he called "very serious measures" to 9)restore calm. But Mr. Peres said there have been no 10)visible results as yet.
