Friends in the real world and online, these students at the University of West London use social networking sites to stay in touch wherever they are, and their virtual world is dominated by Facebook. More than 600 million users around the world, for many, it is their online identity.

"It’s a change in me to use Facebook quite regularly for advertising purposes and helps keep in touch with students who are all mainly on Facebook."

"I post photographs, I swap, I discuss with my friends, I like joining groups."

I don’t think people change them much in thousands of years.

The inexorable rise of Facebook is a threat to that other online giant---Google. It’s fresh attempt to break into social networking offers video conferencing and tie to privacy control allowing users to choose the information they share with different circles of friends, reinventing the brand could help it hang onto the advertisers it depends on.

"We're seeing billions of dollars being invested social media activity by businesses. From a consumer point of view, I mean, you know, it’s a huge number of people who are engaged into different types of social networking, not just Facebook. They spend more and more time there, so your friends there, so these types of interests there, it's how things they shared and communicated. I think that because the consumers there with more and more money being invested into space."

So does Google Plus offering enough to entice the Facebook generation?

"The Google Plus---it looks like you can actually have more control of your account and your privacy and stuff, I think it’s better."

"Take quite a lot of time, quite a lotof effort between people to switch over, some people don’t like switching over. Unless somebody else got all your pictures, all your videos, and all your memories if you like and help you move it over."

"If you have been on Facebook for two years, the amount of photos, some people have got in the thousands, will enchant you put all those memories into one, into another space."

Google Plus is invitation only for now, but it is a serious challenger to Facebook, the fight for your friends just got interesting.
