Heart to Heart

Li Feiyan: For most of the readers of English Salon, Heart to Heart International is still an unfamiliar name. Could you introduce the nature and guiding principle of your organization to us briefly?

Gary Morsch: Heart to Heart International is a grass-roots1 volunteer? based humanitarian organization that works worldwide. The mission of Heart to Heart is to inspire and mobilize people to respond to the needs of the poor, whether they live in our own communities, or on the other side of the world. We invite all people to serve with us, and we serve all people, without regard to their race or religious or political beliefs. We are committed to doing things with excellence, and being accountable to the companies and individuals who donate to us. With this in mind, we keep our overhead2 very low, which is below 2, so that every dollar donated to Heart to Heart is multiplied many times over!

Li: As I know, Heart to Heart is a nonprofit organization, what inspired you to found such an organization?

Gary Morsch: I really didn’t have any idea that Heart to Heart would grow to such a large and respected organization. When I started Heart to Heart, I was only thinking of organizing one project, and then going back to my job as a medical doctor. However, there was so much enthusiasm among the volunteers who were involved in that first project in 1992, that we decided to organize another project, and then another, and another. Little by little, Heart to Heart has continued to grow into the great organization that it is today.

Li: Heart to Heart is committed to deliver the right aid, to the right people at the right time, I’ m wondering how you judge people are qualified to get the aid?

Gary Morsch: Of course, we wish we could help every person in the world who is in need. Since we can’t, we try to assess the areas of the world where there is great need, and then look at the resources we have, the funding that is available, the interest of our volunteers, etc. If we have the resources and volunteers, we can then respond to the needs of a particular area of the world. Whatever it is we do, however, it is always important that we do the right thing getting the right aid to the right people at the right time!

Li: Besides delivering aid to people in need, has Heart to Heart considered making effort at dismissing the sources of poverty? Materials can only help people out of poverty transitorily3, if he himself doesn’t work hard or the outside circumstance is poor, he will possibly suffer from poverty again.

Gary Morsch: There is an old proverb that says, “Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.” We at Heart to Heart believe there is a place for both. Sometimes it is necessary to “give out fish.” That is, we give food or medicines or clothing to people who need them. In addition, we also believe it’s important to “ teach people to fish.” That is why Heart to Heart sets up medical training programs around the world. In China, we are teaching doctors and nurses courses in pediatrics4, emergency medicine, and ophthalmology5. In this way, we hope to do more than give out band-aids6. We’re trying to get to the root of problems through educational programs.

Li: As we know, the world has a population of more than 6 billion and many are still struggling on the poverty line. Does Heart to Heart have any plan in the future to make more people join this big family, offering aid and getting help?

Gary Morsch: Heart to Heart has never had a goal based on numbers? ? whether it’s a certain number of people helped, or a certain value of product delivered, or a number of countries served. Instead, we’ve focused on doing our work with quality and excellence. In other words, our goal is not to be the biggest organization, but the best at what we do! Of course, we want to encourage as many people as possible to join us in our efforts, and welcome people throughout the world to join Heart to Heart as we serve the poor!

Li: With the advance of the society and the improvement of our living standard, more and more Chinese people want to help others after shaking off poverty, but most of them are wondering how they can help people in the other part of the world, through what organization. If they want to offer help through Heart to Heart, what should they do?

Gary Morsch: Heart to Heart’s China headquarters is located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. This office coordinates our programs in China. People who are interested in supporting our work, or volunteering for our programs, are encouraged to contact our China director, Dr. Brian Robinson, by emailing him at [email protected]. We are also interested in starting Heart to Heart chapters in other cities. Information on starting a chapter can be obtained by emailing Barbi Moore at [email protected]. Finally, information about Heart to Heart can be found on our website at “hearttoheart.org” .

最后,有关心连心的信息可以在我们的网站hearttoheart.org上找到。
