Coalition MPs returning to Canberra are openly blaming the result on the decision to oust Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister. But his successor Scott Morrison insists the government is still competitive.

The PM will this morning deliver the national apology to victims and survivors of institutional child sexual abuse. The apology was recommended in the final report from the Royal Commission, which also called for a national strategy on the issue. Hundreds of survivors are expected to attend the event in the House of Representatives, which will also be addressed by opposition leader Bill Shorten.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister has described the killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi as a huge and grave mistake. Last week, Riyadh admitted Mr Khashoggi was killed inside its consulate in Istanbul during a fist fight, but many countries have questioned that account. Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir has offered his condolences to Mr Khashoggi's family, and vowing those responsible for his death will be punished.
