A gunman has killed at least 12 people, including a police officer, at a country music venue in California. Police say former Marine, Ian David Long, opened fire on the dance floor at the Borderline Bar and Grill near Los Angeles before shooting himself. Authorities say the 28-year-old used a legally purchased handgun to carry out the rampage.

In his first TV appearance since losing the prime ministership, Malcolm Turnbull took aim at those he said "blew up the government". In a special episode of Q-and-A, he named nine key figures in the insurgency, including Peter Dutton, Tony Abbott, Mathias Cormann, and Steve Ciobo.

New South Wales Labor is expected to elect a new leader this weekend after Luke Foley quitted yesterday. ABC reporter Ashleigh Raper issued a statement alleging Mr Foley put his hand down her dress and inside her underpants during a Christmas party in 2016. Mr Foley says the allegations are false, but he has resigned as opposition leader. He says he has already hired lawyers and plans to commence immediate defamation action.

And Northern Territory police have found the body of a child following an extensive land and air search north-west of Alice Springs. The child's body was discovered 120 metres away from a family of three who were all found dead yesterday near an abandoned car. Police are yet to identify the body, but they had spent the day looking for a 12-year-old boy.
