A gunman has killed at least 12 people, including a police officer, at a country music venue¹ in California. Police say former Marine², Ian David Long, opened fire on the dance floor at the Borderline Bar and Grill³ near Los Angeles before shooting himself. Authorities say the 28-year-old used a legally purchased handgun to carry out the rampage.

Mr Foley says the allegations are false, but he has resigned as opposition¹⁰ leader. He says he has already hired lawyers and plans to commence immediate¹¹ defamation¹² action.

And Northern Territory police have found the body of a child following an extensive land and air search north-west of Alice Springs. The child's body was discovered 120 metres away from a family of three who were all found dead yesterday near an abandoned car. Police are yet to identify the body, but they had spent the day looking for a 12-year-old boy.
