US special counsel Robert Mueller has broken his silence about the Russia investigation — and says charging Donald Trump was not an option. In a statement in Washington overnight, Mr Mueller also announced his retirement from the Justice Department as he officially closed the investigation. Speaking publicly for the first time since he was appointed head of the inquiry, Mr Mueller emphasised that his report did not exonerate the president. President Trump says Mr Mueller's statement changes nothing and that the case is closed.

A 14-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl, has been charged over a fatal car crash north of Brisbane, and will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act in Queensland. Both children have been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle. A 14-year-old boy was killed, while a 13-year-old boy and three girls were injured.

Rescue crews in the Hungarian capital Budapest are still searching for 21 people missing after their tour boat capsized sinking in the river Danube and killing at least seven. The sightseeing boat carrying 30 South Korean tourists, two tour guides and a photographer sank in a matter of seconds after it collided with a much-larger cruise ship.

A US extradition hearing in Britain for Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, has been delayed because of his ill health. Mr Assange was due to take part via video link from the London prison where he is serving a 50 week sentence for skipping bail. His lawyers have managed to have the hearing delayed until mid June after it was revealed Mr Assange has been moved to a medical ward in the prison.
