China has urged Japanese leaders to learn from post-war Germany in dealing¹ with historical issues and wartime atrocities². Foreign Ministry³ spokeswomen Hua Chunying said Germany and Japan’s approaches have been vastly different. In particular, she pointed⁴ to a historic visit in 1970 by German Chancellor⁵ Willy Brandt to a monument in Poland honoring the Jewish victims killed by Nazi⁶ troops.

"The kneeling-down of the German chancellor Willy Brandt won the forgiveness, respect and trust of the world for Germany. The reconciliation⁷ between France and Germany has brought European integration⁸ and peace and prosperity to the European continent for more than half a century. But, in sharp contrast, Japanese leaders have not reflected upon their history of militaristic aggression⁹. Instead, they have flagrantly visited the Yasukuni Shrine¹⁰, which honors Japan Class A war criminals from World War Two." said Hua Chunying, Spokeswoman, Chinese Foreign Ministry.
