No survivors¹, after a passenger plane carrying 153 people crashed into a two-storey building in Nigeria’s largest city of Lagos on Sunday. And possible casualties on the ground could add to the heavy death toll².

　　Dead bodies were being evacuated³ from inside the building hit by the the Dana Airlines plane in Lagos. A wild inferno⁴ had engulfed⁵ the building and was hard to put out due to a water shortage.

　　Security personnel deployed⁶ in the area also had difficulty in controlling the large crowds who gathered at the scene. Military helicopters had to patrol around the area to provide security.

　　Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority Harold Demuren confirmed that none of the 153 passengers on board the aircraft survived.

　　The Dana Airlines flight was headed from Nigeria’s capital city Abuja to Lagos. It crashed in a residential⁷ area just outside the airport. Al-Jazeera reported people on the ground believed the aircraft may have hit a power line before crashing into the building. The accident happened barely 24 hours after a Nigerian Allied⁸ Cargo⁹ air plane crash-landed in Ghana, killing¹⁰ at least 10 people.

　　The crash also trapped more than 40 people living in the two-storey building. No exact number of the ground casualties has been given so far. Local residents fear that the fire may cause the building to collapse¹¹ soon.

　　Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a three-day national mourning on Sunday. The president has ordered the fullest possible investigation¹² into the crash.

　　He assured air travelers that the right lessons will be learned from the tragic¹³ loss of life, and further measures will be put in place to boost aviation safety in the country.
