Opposition Mounting Against Indonesia's President Wahid
16 Jul 2001 12:53 UTC

Opposition to Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid is mounting, just five days before his 1)deadline to lawmakers to drop 2)impeachment plans against him. Monday, parliament's largest party said it would call for impeachment hearings Friday, if the president goes ahead with his threat to 3)declare a state of emergency that day. As Patricia Nunan reports from Jakarta, Mr. Wahid is heading for a showdown with lawmakers, later this week.
Officials of the People's Democratic Party of Struggle say they support plans to immediately start impeachment 4)proceedings against President Abdurrahman Wahid, if he carries out his threat to declare a state of emergency Friday.
With 186 seats, the party - known as the PDIP - has the highest representation in the 500-member parliament. The PDIP is the party of Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who is expected to 5)take over the presidency if Mr. Wahid is forced from power.
The statement from PDIP officials comes after the speaker of the national assembly, Amien Rais, made similar comments last Friday.
President Wahid has warned lawmakers that he will impose a state of civil emergency by 6 pm, Friday, if lawmakers refuse to drop their plan to open impeachment hearings against him. The move would allow Mr. Wahid to 6)dissolve parliament and call for new elections.
Some analysts say it is unlikely President Wahid will be able to survive impeachment hearings, scheduled to begin on August 1.
President Wahid has been locked in a battle with 7)parliament since February, when lawmakers 8)censured him for his alleged involvement in two 9)corruption scandals. The president denies all charges of wrongdoing. Indonesia's Attorney General has cleared President Wahid of all charges.
