The 1)suicide attack happened at a bus stop across from the train station in Binyamina - a small town north of Tel Aviv. The militant1 group Islamic Jihad claims responsibility for the attack and 2)identifies the 3)bomber as Nidal Shadouf, from a village near the West Bank town, Jenin.
In response, Israeli tanks fired at Palestinian security posts in Jenin and nearby Tulkarm. No 4)casualties were reported.
Prime Minister Arial Sharon says the suicide bombing shows the world the Palestinian Authority is refusing to fight terrorism. The prime minister's spokesman, Raanan Gissen, called the suicide bombing "most 5)regrettable." "There hasn't been a day, one day of quiet," he said. " Despite all our efforts to convince Chairman Arafat to take those steps, there hasn't been one day of quiet. The Palestinians were 6)intent on counting the days of calm while we're counting our dead every day."
Some people have criticized the government for being too 7)restrained in its battle against terror. There were reports last week Israel has developed plans for a massive military action to disarm2 the Palestinians reports which are denied by Israel. In an apparent reference to that sort of show of force, Government Minister Ephriam Sneh of the Labor3 Party - a former defense4 minister - says he is not interested in "fireworks," saying the army must focus on terrorists and those organizing them.
The Palestinian Authority also 8)condemned the attack and called for an end to violence and 9)incitement by all parties. In Washington, the State Department urged Palestinian leaders to 10)condemn the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
The suicide attack coincided with the opening in Jerusalem of the Maccabiah Games, sometimes called the Jewish Olympics. Hours earlier, the bodies of two Palestinians were discovered near Jerusalem's Teddy Stadium. Police said they were preparing a bomb to plant near the sporting event, when it 11)blew up 12)prematurely. Security is high around Maccabiah events. Some athletes chose not to compete because of the security situation in Israel.
