The US and China have agreed to halt new tariffs¹ and engage in talks, avoiding the escalation² of a global trade war between the world's two biggest economies. The US president, Donald Trump³, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, met for dinner on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, where they brokered⁴ the de-escalation. The US had planned to increase tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports on January 1 from 10 to 25 per cent, but that increase has been delayed while both sides try to reach a permanent agreement within the next 90 days.
