A 12-year survey project has concluded that an underwater mountain range-running north of Siberia-is a geological extension of Greenland-the autonomous¹ territory already controlled by the Danes.

As a result, they say 556,000 square miles of the North Pole belongs to them-an area about 20-times the size of Denmark.

Five nations now lay claim to that territory, but Denmark is now the first country to declare outright² ownership of the North Pole.
