NASA's SDO Solar Dynamics¹ Observatory² has captured stunning³ new images of the sun. The never seen before images show materials streaming outward fromsunspotsincluding a large wave travelling across the sun, known as thecoronalmassejection.

The rich detail of the high-resolution video allows scientists to examine close details of activity on the sun's surface within colorful plumes⁴ of rising smoke.

These thermal⁵ images provide the first high-resolution measurements of the sun at different temperatures.
