 　　Sweet Porridge¹ 甜粥

　　A little girl and her mother once lived in an old, old house. 从前，有个小女孩和她妈妈住在一间非常、非常破旧的房子里。

　　They were so poor that sometimes they had² no wood for a fire. 她们很穷，有时候连生火的木头都没有。

　　Sometimes they had no supper and went to bed hungry. 有时候，她们连晚餐都吃不上，就只好饿着肚子上床睡觉了。

　　One cold day the little girl went far into the woods.  在一个寒冷的日子，小女孩走进森林深处。

　　She wanted to find some wood for a fire. 她想找到一些生火的木头。

　　She had no coat, and she was³ very cold. 她没穿外套，感到非常冷。

　　She was crying because she was so cold and hungry. 她又冷又饿，因而哭了起来。

　　"I wish that my mother and I could⁵ have some sweet porridge for supper," she said⁶. “我真希望妈妈和我晚餐能喝上一些甜粥”，她说。

　　"How good it would⁷ be!"  “那该多好啊”！

　　The little girl found⁸ some wood. 小女孩找到了一些木头。

　　Just as⁴ she was ready to go home, she saw⁹ a queer¹⁰ little old woman. 正当她准备回家的时候，她看见了一位古怪矮小的老妇人。

　　The woman had a little black pot¹¹. 妇人提着一个小小的黑色罐子。

　　"Why are you crying, my dear?" asked the woman. "Are you lost?" “你为什么哭啊，亲爱的”？妇人问道。“你迷路了吗”？

　　"No," said the girl. I am hungry. “没有”，小女孩说。我饿了。

　　My mother and I are very poor, and we have had nothing to eat all day long. 妈妈和我太穷了，我们一整天都没有吃东西了。

　　Oh, dear! I wish we could have some sweet porridge for supper! 哦，天哪！我希望我们晚餐能喝到一些甜粥。

　　"I will help you," said the woman. “我来帮你”，妇人说。

　　"Take this little black pot. “你把这个小黑罐拿走。

　　When you want some porridge, you must put the pot on the fire and say 'Little pot, boil¹².' 当你想要喝粥的时候，你只要把罐子放到火上，并说‘小罐，煮。’

　　Soon it will be full of porridge. 小罐很快就会盛满粥。

　　When the little black pot is full, you must say 'Little pot, stop.'" 当小黑罐满了的时候，你必须说，‘小罐，停。’”

　　"Oh, thank you!" said the girl. “哦，谢谢你”！小女孩说。

　　She took¹³ the pot and ran¹⁴ home. 她提着小罐跑回了家。

　　Then she put the pot on the fire, and said, "Little pot, boil." 然后，她把小罐放到火上，并说，“小罐，煮”。

　　The little pot began to boil, and soon it was full of sweet porridge. 小罐就开始煮，不一会儿，罐里就盛满了甜粥。

　　"Little pot, stop," said the girl. “小罐，停”，小女孩说。

　　At once it stopped. The porridge was done. 小罐立刻停了。粥煮好了。

　　The girl and her mother ate¹⁵ all the porridge they wanted. 小女孩和她的妈妈喝到了她们想喝的粥。

　　The next day the little girl went to get some more wood for the fire. 第二天，小女孩去找更多的木头用来生火。

　　She was gone a long time. 她去了很长时间。

　　"She will be very hungry when she comes home," said her mother. “她回来的时候一定会非常饿”，她母亲说。

　　"I will make some hot porridge." “我要煮一些热粥”。

　　But the street was full of porridge for many, many days. 但是，以后的好多好多天，大街上到处都是粥。

　　The people had to eat their way across the street. 人们不得不吃出一条路才能穿过大街。
