 　　The Old Flag¹ 古老的旗帜

　　One evening Patty said², "Tomorrow will be Washington's Birthday. Will there be a parade⁴?"  一天晚上帕迪说，“明天是华盛顿的诞辰纪念日，会不会有游行啊”？

　　"Yes," said Father, "there will be a big parade tomorrow.  “会有的”，爸爸说，“明天将有一场盛大的游行。

　　We shall⁵ all go in our car and carry the beautiful old flag that Grandfather gave⁷ me."  我们都坐着我们的小汽车参加，还会带上祖父留给我的漂亮而古老的旗帜”。

　　Washington's Birthday came⁸, but Father could⁹ not be in the parade. He had¹⁰ to go to another town.  华盛顿的诞辰纪念日到了，但是爸爸参加不了游行了。他必须赶到另一个城镇。

　　"I am sorry that I must go today," He said. Then he told the children good-bye, and went away in the car. 他说，“我很抱歉，今天我必须走了”。然后他跟孩子们告了别，开车离开了。

　　Patty and Ned were very sorry that their old flag would¹¹ not be in the parade.  帕迪和奈德感到非常难过，因为他们的古老旗帜不能出现在游行队伍里了。

　　"Oh, Mother," said Ned, "I can walk in the parade and carry the old flag. Please let me carry it."  “嗨，妈妈”，奈德说，“我能举着古老的旗帜步行在游行的队伍里。请让我举着它吧。”

　　Patty said, "Let me go with Ned. I can walk in the parade and help him carry our flag."  帕迪说，“让我跟奈德一起去吧。我能步行在游行的队伍里帮他举着我们的旗。”

　　"I am sorry, children," said Mother. "But the flag is much too big for you to carry so far."  “很抱歉，孩子们”，妈妈说。“这面旗对你们来说太大，你们举着它是不可能走那么远的”。

　　Then Ned said, "Oh, Patty, I know the best thing to do. 这时奈德说，“哦，帕迪，我知道最好应该怎么做了”。

　　The Washington's Birthday parade always goes down our street. 华盛顿的诞辰纪念日游行总是要沿着我们的街道走的。

　　We can put the old flag out of the window. 我们可以把那面古老的旗帜挂到窗户外面。

　　Then all the people will see it when the parade goes by." 然后，当游行的队伍经过的时候，所有人都可以看到它了。

　　"Oh, that will be fine!" said Patty. “哦，那就太好了”！帕迪说。

　　So Ned and Patty put the old flag out of the front window. 于是，奈得和帕迪把那面古老的旗帜挂到了窗户外。

　　How beautiful it looked!  它看起来多么美丽啊！

　　Soon the children heard a noise. 没过多久，孩子们听见一阵喧哗声。

　　Ned said, "The parade is coming. Hear the drums¹²! The band¹³ is playing." 奈得说，“游行的队伍来了。听，那是鼓声！乐队正在演奏了”。

　　The children ran⁶ to the window. 孩子们跑到了窗前。

　　All the people in the parade saw¹⁴ the beautiful flag in the window and took¹⁵ off¹⁶ their hats. 游行队伍里的所有人都看到了挂在窗外的美丽旗帜，并摘下了他们的帽子。

　　Patty and Ned were very happy. 帕迪和奈得非常高兴。

　　They said, "Our dear old flag was³ in the parade after all."  他们说，“我们心爱的古老旗帜终究参加了游行”。
