“You might let me alone a minute, Josie Dawn,” he growled¹ one night. “A fellow’s got to do something in this world except play ball every minute.”

“I won’t let you alone until the game is over. If I can’t play, my brother has to play well enough to make up for it.”

It was now Friday evening. The game was set for nine-thirty the following morning. The team had their last practice after school, and Joe did not come in until dinner time. Then he refused to eat, and sat hunched² up in a shivering heap before the fireplace.
