Israel has decided to continue supporting a cease-fire with the Palestinians. But Israel will continue targeting 1)suspected terrorists.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and a group of senior government ministers decided to maintain support for a truce with the Palestinians. The security 2)cabinet also decided to continue its policy of killing suspected Palestinian militants.
Mr. Sharon says such targeted attacks, which the Palestinians call 3)assassinations, are a matter of self-defense. "We will 4)conduct active defense and we are going to exercise our right of self-defense," he said.
The decision follows increased violence that 5)threatens the cease-fire that took effect last month.
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said after the meeting that the truce is in a very deep crisis. He said Israel and the Palestinians have to do everything to save the cease-fire because without it there will be more 6)victims and blood on both sides.
This week five Islamic militants were killed by Israeli forces, a Palestinian taxi driver was shot dead by Israeli soldiers, and two Israeli 7)civilians were killed.
And Israeli police have found the body of a Jewish 8)shepherd who was shot and killed at close range near the West Bank town of Hebron. The army says the man was shot by Palestinian gunmen.
Two car bombs 9)exploded Monday in the central Israeli town of Yehud, but there were no serious injuries.
Israeli and Palestinian security officials met late Monday in an effort to strengthen the 10)truce. The session was described as stormy, and no progress was reported.
U.S. officials are blaming both sides for the continued fighting, criticizing Israel's policy of 11)pinpoint attacks against Islamic militants, and saying the Palestinians have not done enough to fight terror and violence.
Secretary of State Colin Powell 12)convinced both sides to accept a proposed seven day period of total calm, to be followed by a six week 13)cooling-off period and confidence-building measures.
Nearly 630 people, mostly Palestinians, have been killed since the conflict 14)erupted last September.
