Prime minister Scott Morrison has met with US president Donald Trump¹ over dinner in Osaka ahead of the annual G20 summit. Mr Trump heaped praise on Mr Morrison after his surprise election win. Leaders of the world's most powerful nations are holding two days of talks with a focus on economic growth and security in the Middle-East.

Some subsidies⁴ for Queensland farmers in drought areas will be controversially slashed⁵ by the state government. A recent policy review has called for the end of a subsidy⁶ for transporting food and water onto drought-affected properties. The state government says the measure will be scrapped⁷ by 2021 to force farmers to better plan for drought conditions.

Two council workers near Cooma in regional New South Wales have found the fossilised jaw⁸ of an ancient giant wombat⁹. The juvenile¹⁰ diprotodon species died out about thousands of years ago but their bones have been found all across Australia. Researchers say the find is rare given most of the jaw's right side is intact.
