| Lesson 10 Dialog 1: in store for(coming in the future) ,process(过程) F: I see some some major changes in store for style plus factory workers. M: Yes,they have two choices really.(realistically speaking. F: learn to use computers. M: right, learn to use computers or find another job. F: either choice’s difficult. M:The employees are skilled at their work, they understand the process of making clothing. F: They just need to learn computer skills. M:Right, they need to be skilled with computers. Q: What are the workers choices? A: learn to use computers or find another job. Dialog 2: tradeoff(权衡),loyal→loyalty I was laid off/downsized/my position was terminated(表示客观原因) I was fired/I was let go/I was asked to resign(表示主要雇员主观原因) F: As I asked you before, what do I do with my workers? M:You could retrain them or you can hire new workers. F: I don’t want to lay off people, some of our employees have been working for us for 20 years. M:That loyalty is hard to replace. F: but it may be difficult to retrain these people. M: true, it may be easier to find new ones. F: there’s really a tradeoff here. M: If you hire new workers, you lose time rebuilding loyalty. F: and if I retrain my old workers , I lose time while they are in training. M: The bottom line (归跟到底)is that you are going to lose time. F: and time is money. Q: What are Ms.Anderson’s choices? A: retrain workers or hire new workers. Dialog3 :factor(因素) M: There are three factors to consider, cost ,time and loyalty. F: Cost?you mean how much it’ll cost to retrain the workers? M: and how much it’ll cost to train the new ones. F: Both will take time. M: No.2, time. Time spent in retraining is time lost in production. F: and lost time means lost revenue. M:The third factor is loyalty, We talked about worker loyalty already. F: and our loyalty to them, our factory is like a family. M: So your choice boils down to these factors: cost, time and loyalty.
