Israel says its military struck several Iranian military targets inside Syria. The military says the attack came after a missile was fired towards Israel. It blames Iranian forces.

The government shutdown rolls into its 31st day after Democrats¹ rejected a plan from President Trump². He had offered to temporarily extend protection for immigrants brought illegally to the US as children in exchange for border wall funds.

Authorities in Mobile, Alabama say a police officer was shot and killed on Sunday. A suspect is in custody³. Prosecutors⁴ say they're authorizing⁵ capital murder charges.

A bitter deep freeze is gripping the northeast, Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic. The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below normal, with some wind chills hitting 40 below.
