President Trump¹ says resolving the government shutdown should be easy, but he won't back down on a border wall. The shutdown is leading to long lines at airports, as security screeners miss work.

Attorney General nominee² William Barr's Senate confirmation³ hearings begin on Tuesday. He's expected to face questions about the Robert Mueller investigation⁴ and executive powers.

A 21-year-old Wisconsin man accused of kidnapping 13-year-old Jayme Closs and killing⁵ her parents went to court on Monday. Charges against Jake Thomas Patterson include international homicide, kidnapping and armed burglary.

A stretch of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles was reopened, after snow stranded⁶ the drivers for hours. Storms are forecast for parts of California on Tuesday. And evacuations were ordered in some wildfire-burned areas.
