 "Well, of all things!" he cried, as he held the gifts up for his grandfather to see. 他拿起礼物让祖父看，大声说，哦，看这些。

"I like the coat, and the knife is a splendid¹ one; but I don't see where the luck part comes in." 我喜欢这件外套，这把刀也很棒；但我不知道运气会从何而来。

The grandfather was old and wise. So he smiled and said, "It wouldn't be the first time that luck has been found in a knife." 年长而智慧的祖父笑了笑说道，在一把刀里找到运气已经不是头一次了，

Franz did not know what his grandfather meant, for he had always had a knife. 弗朗茨不明白祖父的意思，因为他经常会使用到小刀。

The boy belonged to a wood carver's family, and had learned² to whittle³ when he was just a little fellow. 他的家里是做雕刻的，弗朗茨还是个小家伙的时候就学会削木头了。

He was very good at whittling⁴, too. 当然他也很会削木头。

Franz liked his presents very well. 弗朗茨非常喜欢他的礼物。

But he did not see how either of them would bring him luck, and he wrote to his mother telling her so. 但是他不明白两个礼物怎么能给他带来运气，于是他写信给他妈妈，向她说出自己的疑惑。

In a few days she wrote back from the city, "The knife will surely⁵ turn out to be a luck gift, Franz. 不到几天，妈妈从城市里给他回了信，这把刀一定会是一件幸运礼物。

Just wait and see, "So Franz waited and wondered. 等着瞧吧，于是弗朗茨好奇的等着。

Winter came, and cold winds blew down from the mountain tops. 冬天来了，寒冷的风从山顶吹下来。

There were no letters from the city now, for the valley was shut in by snow and ice, and no one was coming up the mountain-side. 城市里也不再有信寄来了，因为山谷被冰雪阻断，没有人能上得了山。

1 splendid
