A minivan slammed into pedestrians² in Tokyo early Tuesday, on a street where people had gathered for new year's celebrations. 8 people were injured. Police say a 21-year-old man was arrested.

A huge, wet crowd spent a rainy new year's eve in New York's Times Square. People paid ten dollars each for plastic ponchos³ as they watched the famous ball drop.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft was set to fly by a distant, icy object called Ultima Thule early new year's day. Scientists hope that new high resolution pictures of the object are on the way back to Earth.
