A Winter walk

冬日漫步

The slack wind gently murmurs¹ through the shutters², with the softness of velvet³ against the windows; an owl⁴ sits in a hollow tree in the depth of the swamp; the bucks⁵ sneak⁶ into their enclosure; the cattle stand silently in their stalls and the hawk⁷ is also housed; the hound huddles⁸ quietly near the stove and the pendulum⁹ of quartz¹⁰ wall clock swings silently on the bracket. The earth itself has fallen into sleep. But all the air has been alive with feathery snowflakes descending¹¹, as if the sovereign god in legends, showering her silvery grain over all the fields.

轻柔的风低声地吹着，吹过百叶窗，吹在窗上，轻软地好像羽毛一般。猫头鹰安坐在沼泽地深处一棵空心树里面，羊儿已经悄悄地回到圈中，牛儿在栏圈里一声不响地站着，鹰儿归巢，猎犬安静地蜷缩在火炉旁，壁架上石英钟的钟摆静静地摆动着。大地睡着了。可是空气中还是充满了生机，鹅毛雪花片片，不断地落下，好像传说中至高无上的造物主，正在我们的田野上撒下无数银色的谷种。

We sleep, and at length awake to the still reality of a winter morning.

我们也睡着了。一觉醒来，正是冬天的早晨。

The snow lies warm as cotton or down upon the threshold; the frosted rectangular glasses of window admit shafts¹² of light, which enhances the cozy¹³ cheer inside. We see the roofs altogether are covered with virgin¹⁴ snow. The tree's branches are arched under their snow burden. The clusters of shrubs¹⁵ in the yard have been covered in white pear blossom. A white view has displaced the dusky landscape, as if nature had strewn her fresh designs in the fields overnight as models for man's art.

万籁无声，雪厚厚地堆着，门槛上像是铺了层厚厚的棉花；一束束光线透过结了冰纹的长方形玻璃，更增添了屋内舒适愉快的感觉。窗外一幢幢的房子覆盖着洁白的雪；树枝被雪压弯了；院子中的灌木丛好像开满了簇簇白色的梨花。一片白色的景象取代了昏暗的风景，似乎大自然一夜之间，把田野风景重新设计过，好让人间的画师来临摹。

Silently we open the door a bit of fraction, when cold winds ventilate the house on the moment. We walk out and are greeted by the cutting air. The stars have already lost some of their sparkle, and a fabulous¹⁶ fain brass¹⁷ light in the east proclaims the approach of day. While the far western coast is still insulated by dissipating mist and everything is suspicious as if one were walking into a shadowy realm. There is the least possible humidity in the atmosphere, all is frozen before being evaporated.

我们轻轻地把门打开一条小缝，一股凉气顿时吹入屋内。走出屋外，寒风迎面扑来，利如刀割。星光已经不那么闪烁光亮。东方露出一种奇幻的古铜色光彩，表示天快要亮了；但西海岸之景仍被正在消散的雾气笼罩着，一片幽暗，疑似误入异域。空气中一点儿水分都没有，水蒸气还未蒸发就凝成了冰霜。

The sun rises at length, melting the air with his beams. I walk out of the yard, sniffing¹⁸ the crisp air and wandering on the straightforward¹⁹ path between the village and the suburb.

太阳终于出来了，空气中的冰冻开始融化。我走出庭院，呼吸着清新的空气，漫步在从乡村通往市郊的笔直大道上。

A little boy is briskly hopping²⁰ (skipping) about on the snowfield, delightedly hurling²¹ snowballs in the air. He is dressed in thermal²² clothing, but his face gets flush with cold. A pair of lovers is walking. The jolly girl teases and tickles²³ her boyfriend now and then, stuffing a hand of snow into his collar.

一个小男孩蹦蹦跳跳地走在雪地上，欢快地掷雪球玩，他穿着保暖的外衣，但小脸还是被冻得通红。一对情侣正在散步，快活的女孩不时地咯吱一下男友，把一团雪塞进他的衣领里。

The couple holds their naughty child's hands in a firm clasp, towing him to glide²⁴ on the snowfield. The morning sun shines on them. The field echoes with their intermittent²⁵ giggles²⁶.

一对年轻的夫妇拖着小孩在雪地上滑雪。早晨的阳光照耀着他们，田野回荡着他们一阵又一阵的欢笑声。

The sun rises high. The snow falls down from branches with ice pillars crumbling²⁷ (shattering), and the dead leaves are whirling like stray birds flying in the wind.

太阳升起来了。树枝上的积雪也纷纷落下，冰柱掉下来摔得粉碎，枯叶也如同迷路的小鸟一般从空中飘落。

After being loaded, a boat is waiting for departure in the ferry.

满载货物的船在渡口等待出发。

The tower aerial far away, the tiles on roofs, the marble sculpture on the grass and even the tan wooden house whose wood texture²⁸ could be distinctly observed.The wonderful purity of nature at this season is a pleasing picture. Snow in this winter gets rid of all dirt and rot remainder. We will salute²⁹ the transcendent state of mind of nature, leisureliness³⁰, steadiness and majesty³¹, and hope so to borrow those virtue³², which will stead us in all seasons.

远处高耸的楼顶天线、屋顶上的瓦片、草地上的大理石雕塑，都显得十分干净，连路边棕褐色的木屋竟然能清晰地看出木头的纹理。大自然在这个季节，显得特别纯洁。冬雪将一切污秽和腐烂一扫而空。我们欣赏雪后的大自然一超然物外,悠然宁静，坚定而威严。我们希望借此能从大自然借来这些力量,这对于我们一年四季都有用无比。
