"Is that what he rang for?" I asked.

"Yes: he always has candles brought in at dark, though he is blind."

"Give the tray to me; I will carry it in."

I took it from her hand: she pointed¹ me out the parlour door.

我从她手里接过托盘，她向我指了指客厅门。

The tray shook as I held it; the water spilt from the glass; my heart struck my ribs² loud and fast.

我手中的盘子抖动了一下，水从杯子里溢了出来，我的心砰砰撞击着肋骨。

Mary opened the door for me, and shut it behind me.

玛丽替我开了门，并随手关上。

This parlour looked gloomy: a neglected handful of fire burnt low in the grate;

客厅显得很阴暗。一小堆乏人照看的火在炉中微微燃着。

and, leaning over it, with his head supported against the high, old-fashioned mantelpiece, appeared the blind tenant³ of the room.

房间里的瞎眼主人，头靠高高的老式壁炉架，俯身向着火炉。

His old dog, Pilot, lay on one side, removed out of the way, and coiled up as if afraid of being inadvertently trodden upon.

他的那条老狗派洛特躺在一边，离得远远的，卷曲着身子，仿佛担心被人不经意踩着似的。

Pilot pricked⁴ up his ears when I came in: then he jumped up with a yelp⁵ and a whine⁶, and bounded towards me: he almost knocked the tray from my hands.

我一进门，派洛特便竖起了耳朵，随后汪汪汪，呜呜呜叫了一通，跳将起来，窜向了我，差一点掀翻我手中的托盘。

I set it on the table; then patted him, and said softly, "Lie down!"

我把盘子放在桌上，拍了拍它，柔声地说：“躺下！”

Mr. Rochester turned mechanically to see what the commotion⁷ was: but as he saw nothing, he returned and sighed.

罗切斯特先生机械地转过身来，想看看那骚动是怎么回事，但他什么也没看见，于是便回过头去，叹了口气。

"Give me the water, Mary," he said.

“把水给我，玛丽，”他说。

I approached him with the now only half-filled glass; Pilot followed me, still excited.

"What is the matter?" he inquired.
